Comments from the 2008 Rally:
I was out there on Sunday and had a great time, even though I wasn't racing. I enjoyed the new format a lot and was glad to see everyone who participated having a good time.
I think anyone who steps up for OUR groups fund raiser deserves a huge thanks. It is a thankless job, talking to the participants one would definitely know they had a blast. The new format was very imaginative and allowed all different levels of rigs to compete. So to those that bitched that there wasn't mud heres mud in your eye. Congrats Chuck and Joe not only for a successful event but for stepping up and giving us your vision of a Tuff truck event, Sorry our club was not much help. And thanks to those that supported this years fund raiser in mind or spirit.
It was a lot of fun. My kids want to make it an annual event for them to travel to Billings for the Tough Truck event. Thanks to all those who worked so hard. I know it will be even better and bigger next year. We are looking forward to it!!
When I showed up on Saturday morning, I wasn't even sure I was going to race. Thankfully, Joe talked me into it and I had an absolute blast. The obstacle course was fun, the water carry a challenge, the teeter was a test, and the blind driver obstacle course a demonstration of marital strength.:) The most fun I had though was on the Frame Twister, especially being first as everything was as it needed to be and I threw myself all over the course, certain I was going to hear that familiar 'ting' that something went boom. The fact that it was a racer's weekend and not PURE competition for the sake of competing against another as much as it was competing with yourself to see how well you and your vehicle could perform. Horsepower helped people on times, but it really was a skill (and communication event) in working with someone to achieve the best possible times. My wife and I worked very well on the water carry as she told me when to speed up and slow down, and I relayed terrain changes and she adjusted. Next year, I think she's looking forward to driving as well.
We both liked the "fun" format of it as opposed to the rigidity of a tighter competition, and think that this is the direction future rallies should take, as it appeals to a wider community audience and not just a specific segment of racers and folks with heavily built vehicles.
I had a lot of fun last weekend it was my first time competing in a top truck so it was a bit of a learning experience for me. My favorite event was the obstacle course, it was a lot of fun and i think it showed driver skill really well. One comment i have about the hill climb was I think it would have been better if you didnt have to get lined up twice because the person telling you when to go can make an error or cause you to lose time. It would have been better if we only had to stop at the first hill. I still am not sure if the time stopped after the descent of the first hill or what, either way I think we should have only been lined up once if that makes sense. The frame twister was a little too easy for the big tire class but it was fun none the less. I thought the rock crawl needed some more fine tuning it was just a little too difficult, especially since none of the very capable rigs could make it all the way through without breaking or going out of bounds a bit. Maybe do a big air jump next year instead of the water carry. Thats all i can think of at the moment. Thanks for the weekend.
